Ruth was born and raised on the Hegge farm in Blacktail Township. During high school, she and 3 of her brothers stayed in Williston to attend school as the farm was about 25 miles away. She graduated from WHS in 1946. Ruth married Charlie Fay in 1947 and they had 5 children. They purchased and farmed his family’s farm, in Dublin Township, and also maintained a beautiful home in Williston. The family spent many weekends at their cabin at Long Creek.

Ruth was a artisan skilled in Hardanger needlework. She taught many others this Norwegian handiwork either individually or in classes. She gave many gifts of her work to family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, golfing, fishing, and having her family together in their home. Ruth and Charlie spent winter months at their home in Mesa. She died in 1998. Her family established this memorial scholarship to honor her.
